Insurance Company Standards for House Locks

Insurance company requirements will vary, but the outline below is a typical definition of what you might be asked to conform to by your insurance company.This covers the types of locks you should have installed on all exit doors and accessible windows. If any doors and/or windows fail to meet these standards you may not be fully covered in the event of an Insurance claim.

Final exit door (main entrance door)

Should be fitted with a mortice deadlock of at least five levers or rim deadlock conforming to British Standard BS 3621. If Aluminum/UPVC construction then fitted with a multi-point locking system which incorporates a lever or cylinder deadlock, capable of being secured by a key from both sides.


Other single external doors (includes access door)

Should be fitted with either:

  • A mortice deadlock of at least five levers conforming to BS 3621.
  • A rim deadlock conforming to BS 3621.
  • A key-operated lock with key-operated mortice rack bolts bolt top and bottom(For doors with glass panels).
  • A key-operated lock with top and bottom bolts at least 10 inches in length (for solid doors with no glass panels
  • For Aluminum/UPVC construction then fitted with a multi-point locking system which incorporates a lever or cylinder deadlock, capable of being secured by a key from both sides.

Patio doors

Should be fitted with either a key-operated patio door lock at the top and bottom of each sliding door in addition to the manufacturer's integral lock or a multi-point locking system which incorporates a lever or cylinder deadlock, capable of being secured by a key from both sides.


Double doors (French doors or windows)

Should be fitted with key-operated locks and key-operated mortice rack bolts at the top and bottom of both leaves.


Windows, fanlights and roof lights

All windows, fanlights and roof lights that can be accessed without the use of a ladder, and that can be opened, should be fitted with key-operated window locks.
